For the price point their gear is quite good. In the meantime I hope they do stay in business. If they don't give the free suites away with their hardware, will people be inclined to buy the hardware? On the other hand, does giving away the plugins deter people from paying for the additional high priced plugins? It appears to me that UAD is the company to watch in terms of how long they can do this for.
So it will be interesting to see how long UAD will keep this model of giving their plugins away with hardware. Perhaps that is why I scoff at their high prices. Someone in an earlier post mentioned that I would probably be ok with the "free" plugins that came with my Apollo 8p. Based on multiple forums, this is already happening. Just like with Waves, the honeymoon will eventually be over and people will look elsewhere for plugins. They are still relevant, and have been paid for many times over from an R&D perspective. Many of their plugins have been around fo a long long time. Where there appears to be a difference of opinion is Waves and their $29 plugins. What happens next will be interesting.I think we are saying the same thing for the most part. Obviously, Waves didn't reduce their $200 plugs to $29 out of generosity. I probably even use more SoundToys than Waves Of course both also make very unique tools as well. I just like how they seem to fit and the sonic results. But when it comes to my production, I use many more UAD tools than Waves.

I had the UAD-1 card and traded that card in for a duo card plus an an octo card. I'm thinking that for myself I have paid 5 UAD dollars to every Waves dollar. Around the same time I purchased UAD under Mackie when it was less expensive. I remember paying several hundred dollars for Waves Native Power Pack which was nothing but a few reverbs. I'm not sure when Waves released their first VST.

I can't imagine paying full price for any of their tools unless I need it for a client. This tells me they might have hit their ceiling and need to discount a bit more. This year they are offering the 3 pack bundle plus 1 more for $400. But if UAD is overpriced, wouldn't they go or have gone out of business? Last October 2016 they offered the 3 pack bundle for $400. Having a copy protection that is 100% protects me from subsidizing the warez users.

My point about protection is how heavily cracked Waves was when their $29 plugs cost $200. I'm loving their past year of $29 plugs, but unless they are drastically changing their business model or release poor quality tools, something is in the works. Either a WUP change, big upgrade, a huge secret revolutionary don't know. Out of 32 active coupons, this is the best Universal Audio coupons available today. What I meant was, IMO they can't sell $29 plugs forever. Currently, Universal Audio is offering a coupon for 50 off. Does Waves put out bad plugins? Absolutely, but their great plugins are just that, great.
All things being equal, I would say Waves has the upper hand on pricing now and in the future. Hard to say which would outlast the other. Both companies seem to be on solid ground at the moment.
